As her father’s health continues to decline, Nancy gets the courage to ask him about the plans for Amanda’s future. He tells her that he wants Nancy to care for her “If you’ll have her,” but explains that there are papers stating otherwise: “It names Theil as her guardian.”
This passage gets at the importance of having, and updating, documentation of your wishes for your adult child.
