Q17: Writing With Grace

Part Five:  Me, as a Real Person

McFarland writes about what she sees as a downside to being “high functioning.”

“As I read about Jason Kingsley, I recognize similarities with Grace’s story. Her high functioning, her ability to read and write, her learning another language, her very awareness of how the world views her – all these set her apart from many others with Down syndrome. She’s in the same lonely place as Jason Kingsley. A place where her abilities not only separate her but can raise unrealistic expectations.” P. 171

How do you feel about the “high/low functioning” labels? Do you agree with her assessment?
