Wyllie talks about looking for a “how to” book on Down syndrome.
Do you remember where you got your information from in the early years? Do you have a favorite resource now?
Did you look up Sunfield “charity” online? (www.sunfield.org.uk)
Wyllie also talks about medical discrimination in our community.
Were you aware that doctors discriminated against people with Down syndrome in this way? Did you know that PL 93-112, also known as The Rehabilitation Act of 1973, addressed medical concerns as well as educational ones?
Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act:
“No otherwise qualified handicapped individual in the United States… shall, solely by reason of his handicap, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.”
