A Ward of the State is a true story about a few unique friendships I had and how they affected my life. I grew up with a brother who had cerebral palsy in a time when disabilities were nearly unheard of. The experience led me to work at a group home, where I met my best friend, Ken, a man with Down syndrome. After I met Ken, he changed my life. I learned many things about myself and became a stronger person. He was with me throughout the ups and downs including death, new life, divorce, etc. Throughout our experiences, I learned a lot about myself and was also brought closer to those I loved.
